Matariki Event, set- up and support, 24 - 28 June 2024

Te takanga o te rā/winter solstice - Ngā tohu o te tau hou/Signs of the Māori new year - Matariki week long event is from Monday 24 June until Friday 28 June.

Volunteers are required for setting up, during the event and cleaning up at the end. This event will take place at Waitangi Regional Park

Saturday 22 June and Sunday 23 June 2024 volunteers are required from 7.00am to set up marquee, hang up Matariki kites, hang up waka pictures, set up

Monday 24 June 2024 - 6.00am - marks the 184 years commemoration of the signing of Te Tiriti for the three Rangatira of Hawkes Bay

7.00am - Volunteers are required to do dishes, sort recycling and compostables, pack away tables, set up for schools coming in

Thursday 27 June 2024 - Volunteers are required to prepare hāngi on Thursday evening.

Other volunteers are also required for preparing food, washing & drying dishes, setting up tables & chairs for the Friday morning Matariki karakia event

Friday 28 June 2024 - (Matariki holiday) - A number of volunteers are required as follows:-

  • 5.00am - 9.00am  - Parking wardens
  • 9.00am - 12.00     - Parking wardens
  • 7.30am -               - Serving Hangi
  • 8.30am -               - Washing and drying dishes, setting up tables and chairs for the morning activities, recycling and composting. washing dishes and cleaning up
  • 12.00    - 2.00pm  - Clean up and pack down
     
  • Volunteers are invited to stay and enjoy the Matariki kai stalls and entertainment from 9.00am - 12.00. 

 In addition to the Te Ao Māori/Pacific experience volunteers will also:-

  • Learn how to prep and feed people in a marquee setting. This is a skill that is transferable to a Marae or any big gathering
  • Practice and teach para kore/zero waste and waste minimalisation, sorting recycling
  • Learn about Māori/Pacific beliefs about the taiao/environment, the suns movement, stars - traditional celestial navigation
  • Meet interesting people from the Ātea a Rangi trust and the waka hourua Te Matau a Māui
  • Network
  • Meeting different communities
  • Learn about environmental awareness, preservation, work
  • Learn skills associated with rubbish clean ups, planting native/endemic plants, security, carpark management
