As an approved Tutor you will present Freedom Philosophy courses in the Hawkes Bay prison.
A primary role is to present the material in a way that helps the students to engage, question and understand it and encourages them to apply the teachings.
The role of a Tutor presenting the Society’s practical philosophy courses in a high security prison can be scary at first. It is challenging, even a little frustrating in a constantly changing environment. However, many of our tutors say it is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling roles we may play in our lives.
When a Tutor fronts up to people who have spent much of their days and lives locked up in a highly stressful environment, many coming from difficult and toxic backgrounds, we can understand if they have little tolerance for posturing and platitudes. So, the role of the Tutor is very much about just being your self, being real. When we are non-judgmental, we can build the bridge of trust that is key to presenting the material and meeting the real person in front of us.
Our model is to have two Assistants with a Tutor per group of 8-12 students. We may run multiple groups in parallel.
As a tutor working in the prison you will require a 2 hour security training by Corrections.

Preference is for tutors who can be available for several courses throughout the year, in order to give consistency. Our intention is to have 4 courses a year.
Some prior knowledge of (practical) philosophy and tutoring and facilitation is useful, but full training is provided. Tutors first take on a temporary role of Assistant to help prepare them for the role of Tutor.
The minimum hours are 2-3 hours, once a week, for 6-7 weeks plus a few hours for training.
